So...um...I'm not quite sure why I posted a pic of MartyGould. I think I was cleaning the pics off my iPhone and sent the pic to blog instead of to my email to post.
Anyway, it's quite a good pic of MartyGould, I must say.
Not much new with me...crazy busy year, still busy this summer with classes at U of O...have 114 pages to read before tomorrow at 8am...so time to hit the books!

Apparently I've been neglecting my blog...sorry blog!
I'd love to figure out a way to link my Twitter account with my
Blogger account. In fact, I will need to create a new private
Twitter account as students are starting to follow me and I don't want
to worry about censoring myself all the time....

Finally enjoying December
After a hellacious finals week(s), I'm finally enjoying December with my first snow day of the school year - which conveniently enough comes on the last day before Christmas break!
Gonna drink some cocoa, gonna check in with Facebook, gonna try to organize a mountain of disorganization and get a similarly sized mountain of laundry washed, gonna play with Atticus and watch some trashy daytime tv.
God bless us everyone!

Nothing gold can stay...
Sad, but true. Today we (the UF, Urban Friends), celebrated a 9 year tradition, a thanksgiving fellowship dinner. And while I enjoyed most of it, my drive home left me wondering whether we could make it another 9 years - heck even 5 years...
Frost was right, damn him! The answer is, probably not. Singles become couples. Couples become parents. Parents become parents again and again. Eventually, other things become priorities, and old traditions give way to new traditions.

How (not) to ship things internationally...
So I must preface this post with a story about K and P (names have been omitted to protect the "innocent"). K and P are two dear friends who up and left this great country to find, apparently, another great country 'across the pond, and south.' While they've had many fine adventures (you can read all about it on their blog "Living the Travel Channel"), unfortunately, this great country doesn't have things modern Americans have come to enjoy, like non-abrasive toilet paper, inexpensive feminine hygiene products, and powdery American cocoa (the kind in a packet, versus the real melted chocolate).
K emailed me a list of things they'd like to have, and well, I've taken it upon myself to send them a bit of the ole' US of A and set off to gather the items, my own Tolkien-esque quest (say that three times fast), if you will. K emailed this list back in September, and I'm just now completing my quest, so the Tolkien metaphor wasn't really that far off.
Anywho, the last hurdle was to ship the package (all 12 pounds of it) off to Dubai. I decided to do it today; thinking I could pop into the UPS store, spend 15 minutes (tops), and scurry on my merry way to the Urban Friends Thanksgiving Dinner. Well, that 15 minutes turned into 30, which turned into 45, which ended at a little over an hour and two rather loud mentions of 'sanitary napkins' in a public place later.
I was a hour late the UFT, but when all is said and done, here's what I learned about international shipping:
1) USPS will ship internationally for a cheaper rate, but if the government is corrupt (this is the UPS rep's words, mind you), there is no guarantee the package will make it to the addressee. I guess the wind, rain, and dark of night are trumped by government corruption.
2) Dubai is both a city and a country (according to UPS)
3) UPS doesn't ship to PO Boxes; apparently Dubai only has PO Boxes
4) Hearing the words 'sanitary napkin' uttered over a speaker phone is, in equal parts, amusing and mortifying
So K, if you're reading this...the package is on its way. It should be there by the end of the week - not too shabby. The only problem is I need your phone number to attach to the shipping record - in case there is another couple residing somewhere in the country/city of Dubai with the first names of K and P. I wouldn't want them to get your sanitary napkins and cocoa.
